St Kieran Primary Donates Wheelchairs to Honour Late Teacher Sally Hart

“Her legacy will continue to make a difference not only within the school, but in the lives of children around the world”

Earlier this week, five very special wheelchairs left our factory in Wangara and were loaded into our container bound for Malawi. Beyond providing life-changing mobility, these wheelchairs carry the enduring memory and legacy of Sally Hart- a much loved staff member, cherished teacher, and Assistant Principal at St Kieran Catholic Primary School in Tuart Hill.

Sadly Sally Passed away in February following a short, aggressive illness. Her passing brought deep sadness to the entire St Kieran community, where there optimism, compassion, and unwavering commitment to her student shaped the school in lasting ways. As a dedicated faith-filled educator for 30 years – including nine years as assistant principal at St Kieran’s – Sally cared for everyone she met. Her faith, joy, humour and heartfelt greetings brought light to each day, leaving a legacy of kindness, advocacy and service.

A Champion for Inclusive Education

Sally was a great advocate and passionate champion for children with disability in her school community, believing fiercely that every child deserved the opportunity to participate fully and inspire inclusion.

Caring deeply for everyone she met, her faith, joy, humour, and heartfelt greetings brought light to each day for her students and colleagues alike.

She profoundly shaped the lives of so many young learners, advocate fiercely for students with diverse needs, and enthusiastically initiated Wheelchairs For Kids Australia Wheel-athons at St Kieran Catholic Primary School year after year.

Honouring Sally’s Memory in Metal

The St Kieran community came together to honour her memory. While holding Sally’s family—her husband Steve and her children Ella and Patrick—in their prayers, the school donated $1,500 to Wheelchairs For Kids Australia. Because each custom wheelchair built in Wangara by our volunteers’ costs $300 to produce, this generous donation directly funded five wheelchairs.

Memorial plaques were created to be placed on the five wheelchairs in Sally’s name. On Monday, Sally’s husband Steve, alongside her former colleagues Anthony Davis and Sacha, came in to place the plaques on the frames. It was a very moving experience, but also deeply comforting and satisfying for Steve and the school community.

An Enduring Global Impact

St Kieran’s acting principal Anthony Davis said the school was proud to recognise and pay tribute to Ms Hart through this gesture, capturing her enduring commitment to inclusion, compassion, and opportunity for all. He emphasised that the impact of her life’s work would not remain limited to their local community, but would instead ripple outward to enrich the futures of young people around the world for years to come.

As Wheelchairs For Kids Australia CEO Greg Hebble highlighted, knowing that these five wheelchairs have become part of Sally Hart’s legacy makes them especially meaningful.

As a schoolteacher, Sally was only too aware of the importance of children attending school, and a wheelchair makes this possible for children in developing countries with no other access to mobility aids.

Five children living with disability in Africa will receive their mobility soon thanks to the kindness of the St Kieran community. Sally Hart was a wonderful teacher who is missed by all, and her name will proudly accompany these children on their journey toward independence and opportunity.

May Sally rest in peace.

Vale Sally Hart.
