Fadil and His Mother – Nine Years, One Wheelchair and A Lot of Smiles
High in the quiet, misty mountains south of Lovina in Bali, 13-year old Fadil lives with his mother. To visit their home is a step into a world defined by quiet strength, profound resilience and unwavering bond between a mother and her child. Despite facing hardships that few can actually fathom, Fadil’s home is filled with joy and a radiant smile that lights up the mountain slopes.
A Fragile Beginning Marked by Tragedy
Fadil’s story began under extremely challenging circumstances, born prematurely, he weighed a fragile 1kg at birth and subsequently developed cerebral palsy. Before his family could even absorb the physical and emotional realities of this condition, tragedy struck again. Just five days after Fadil was born, while he was still receiving care in the hospital, his father suffered a sudden and fatal heart attack.
In less than a week, Fadil’s mother found herself grieving the heart-breaking loss of her husband while becoming the sole caregiver to a new-born with complex physical and developmental needs. From those very difficult days, she stepped into her role with absolute courage. Without complex medical support or financial resources, her selfless devotion became Fadil’s greatest sanctuary and strength.
Fadil cannot walk or speak, but he understands the world around him — and despite the hardship he and his mother have faced, he is one of the happiest children you could ever meet.
Nine Years on a Single Set of Wheels
For a child living with cerebral palsy in a remote mountain village, physical mobility is a monumental challenge. Nine years ago, when Fadil was just four years old, a vital turning point occurred. The dedicated team from the Global Village Foundation Bali (GVF) identified Fadil’s need and fitted him with a specially built, rugged adaptive wheelchair donated by Wheelchairs For Kids Australia.
That single wheelchair opened up a world of possibilities. Today, nine years later, Fadil is still using that exact same wheelchair. Because a growing child’s body changes continuously, an off-the-shelf seat is never enough. Year after year, the GVF team treks up the steep mountain roads into the highlands to visit Fadil. During each visit, technicians carefully service, repair, and adjust the chair, reconfiguring the posture support to match his growth. Every single time the team arrives, they are greeted by Fadil’s wonderful, broad smile.
Why Early Mobility & Adaptive Care Matter
For children living with cerebral palsy who are unable to walk, receiving the right wheelchair early in life makes a transformative difference to their physical development, comfort, and overall quality of life. For a child like Fadil, an adaptive wheelchair is about far more than just transportation:
-
Postural Support & Physical Alignment: Proper seating prevents severe spinal deformities, reduces muscle spasticity pain, and assists with digestion and breathing.
-
Stability & Comfort: Custom adjustments ensure that Fadil can sit comfortably for hours without pain or risk of pressure sores.
-
Social Inclusion & Dignity: Being upright and supported allows Fadil to sit at eye level with family members, engage with visitors, and participate meaningfully in community life.
-
Support for Caregivers: A durable, adjustable wheelchair reduces the intense physical strain on his mother, allowing her to safely transport him around their home and village.
Looking Ahead: A New Chapter in Home Therapy
Photographs taken across 2023, 2025, and 2026 capture a beautiful timeline of growth and continuity: Fadil growing taller, his mother standing proudly beside him, and the GVF team working diligently on his trusted wheelchair. Through every milestone, Fadil’s infectious smile remains the constant thread.

Now, another positive step ahead is underway. The Global Village Foundation is arranging for an Occupational Therapist to visit Fadil in his mountain home. The therapist will design a tailored, simple therapy program that his mother can easily continue with him at home. This next phase will help preserve his joint flexibility, build physical strength, and further enhance his day-to-day comfort.
The Lasting Gift of Mobility
Fadil’s journey illustrates what happens when deep maternal love is supported by community care and sustainable aid.
-
Nine years.
-
One wheelchair.
-
One incredibly devoted mother.
-
And one very happy boy.
This is what the gift of mobility truly means to a child. It gives them comfort, inclusion, and the opportunity to experience the world with joy.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to the very special team at Global Village Foundation Bali, who work tirelessly on the ground to bring mobility, dignity, and life-changing support to children and families across Indonesia.
