Transforming Lives, One Chair at a time: Catching Up with Ketut, Our 60,000th Wheelchair Beneficiary
As we stand on the threshold of a monumental milestone- the production and distribution of Wheelchairs for Kids Australia’s 70,000th wheelchair- it provides us with a profound moment of reflection. Behind every single number in that grand total is a child, a family, and story of transformed possibilities.
Recently, our wonderful partners at the Global Village Foundation Bali reached out to share an uplifting update from North Bali. They reconnected with Ketut, the incredible young boy who received our 60,000th wheelchair in January 2025.

A Story of Resilience and Determination
Ketut’s start in life was fraught with immense challenges. Born prematurely weighing a mere 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds), he spent the most critical first two months of his early life bound to a hospital incubator. For his entire first five years, his world was severely restricted: he was virtually bedridden, unable to sit up without receiving dedicated physical assistance.
Ketut was subsequently diagnosed with a severe form of cerebral palsy that fundamentally affects his lower limbs, leaving him completely unable to walk independently. Yet, what his frail body lacked in physical mobility, his indomitable spirit more than made up for in sheer, unyielding determination. Supported by regular and rigorous physiotherapy and the unwavering, compassionate encouragement of his devoted parents, Ketut fought tirelessly every single day to overcome his severe physical constraints.
More than anything else in the world, he possessed deep, burning desire to attend school, learn side by side alongside his peers, and experience a truly vibrant joyous childhood.
When the time came for him to begin his education, his devoted father stepped in to bridge the physical gap. Every single day, his father would carry Ketut on his back to the local village school. Though the distance was only about 300 meters, as Ketut grew older and heavier, the daily journey became physically demanding and increasingly difficult for them both. Eighteen Months Later: Independence, Community and Tradition
Fast forward 18 months: Ketut is now nearly 12 years old, and his world has completely opened up. What was once a life spent mostly confined to the floor or depended on others for mobility has transformed into a daily routine filled with freedom, opportunity and adventure.
His wheelchair is no longer just a piece of equipment- it is an extension of his independence. It allows him to navigate his home comfortably, attend school reliably every single day, and play an active role in his community.
Today, Ketut is known as a bright, enthusiastic student who excels in the classroom and enjoys a rich social life with a close circle of friends.

Beyond school, the wheelchair has unlocked a deeply meaningful connection to his family’s heritage. Ketut’s father serves as a respected Balinese Holyman, traveling regularly across surrounding villages to conduct and facilitate sacred religious ceremonies. Before receiving his wheelchair, it was exceptionally difficult for Ketut to join these journeys. Today, he proudly travels alongside his father, immersing himself in the rich cultural and spiritual traditions that form the heart of Balinese life.
Looking Toward the Future
While Ketut still navigates the daily realities of living with cerebral palsy, his ambition remains boundless. He continues to dream big, aiming to finish his schooling and one day attend university.
